In concert with our review of great sketching devices for the iOS artist, we thought we’d take a look at the best iOS sketching apps. There are many out there, and it can be hard to identify the best ones. Here, we’ll look in depth at a few and give some good reasons we’ve excluded some others. Any we’ve missed can be recommended in the comments.
Everything’s been tested on an iPad 3, with priority on how good these apps are for sketching and general “notebook” art. Is it smooth? Is it fast? Can you use multiple layers, to enable a layer of ink with a separate layer of paint? Generally, most of these apps will let you import a photo, pick any color you want, and produce natural-looking art. What’s worth a deeper look? What could supplement or replace that desktop Wacom + Photoshop combo? If possible, we’ve tried to trace over the same source photo in each app — though this wasn’t possible in Sketchbook Ink.
Sketchbook Pro
This veteran app started on iPhone, and the long heritage that Autodesk have brought from their desktop equivalent is evident in the rich UI. It’s just you, the image, and a small dot that brings up a variety of tools, colors and other buttons. The responsiveness is good, if not perfect, and the wide variety of tools can be customized to your way of working. Tap and hold on any existing tool to swap it for another, including many not visible by default. If you want a box of pencils from 4H to 9B, no problem. Some of the more complex brushes start to lag a little, but generally they’ll keep up with you.
Here’s a quick trace with some of the UI visible — though not my best work.
Extras include Layers (thank goodness), text, and symmetry, plus layered PSD export. There’s even a wrist rest, and multi-finger gesture support for quick brush changes and tool access. A good all-round app, though you’ll need to remember to three-finger swipe for undo, as you’ll otherwise need to tap multiple times.
Sketchbook Ink
Many of the same interface conventions from Pro are in Ink, but with a few differences. It’s all vector, and the tools all produce smooth, crisp lines with different profiles — perhaps thin at the ends and thicker in the middle. This makes some kinds of art very possible, and other types much harder. App is not optimized for your mac excel. There’s no way, for example, to quickly fill with a chosen color, or to blur or smudge. It’s strictly ink.
And even worse than before, since I couldn’t trace a photo. This app really suits a different style of art.
If that suits you, the star feature will also appeal: very high resolution output using the vector source. Zoom in as much as you like, work with tiny brushes, then export to a 100 megapixel image, should you need it (to Dropbox or accessible from iTunes). A neat trick, but the vector-only aspect may be an issue.
ProCreate
Reworked not long ago, the current release is probably the most responsive sketching app on the iPad. The UI is attractive; spartan but very useful, with instantly accessible undo, redo, size and opacity controls that even a stylus can operate. Brushes come in many categories (sketching, inking, painting and more), and you can create your own brushes with a staggering amount of control.
Only a tiny part of the brush customization process is on show here.
Smudging is very quick and works with any of the brushes, and layer support (and export through iTunes) is very welcome. Zooming with two fingers has an extra flourish: a quick pinch sets zoom to 100%. Procreate is a great app for sketching. It’s very responsive and easy to learn but with a great deal of flexibility behind the scenes. Recommended.

A few apps that don’t quite work for one reason or another:
Brushes
There’s variety here, but the lack of variable-width strokes (i.e. within each stroke) leaves this looking less natural than the others. High-resolution playback with a desktop companion app is a great idea, though.
Paper
Best Mac App For Sketching Program
The UI and the feel is great, but it’s just too limited for the money. Free to start, but $7+ for all the tools is too much, and you can only use black, white, grey, or one of the six built-in colors? Forever? No.
Art Studio
The pencil tool is responsive, but brushing is not, and there’s not much flexibility in the brush tools either. Smudging is slow too, though there’s a wider range of tools than many other apps.
ArtRage
Love the tactility of the tools, but it simply doesn’t respond well to quick strokes. If you work too quickly, you’ll only place dots. Also, in common with many other apps, a little laggy in general use.
Summary
Buy Procreate — it’s fantastic. If you need very high resolution output, get Sketchbook Ink, but bear its limitations in mind.
Procreate is best of the bunch due to the quick performance and great tools.
